Soccer Spirited win for Green Island
Green Island’s first win of the season and another spirited perfurmance from Papanui W.M C v .re the highlights of the third round ot the Midland Coachlines boccer League competition on Saturday. Green islands success was at the expense of Western who can Ki-afford to drop points m this fashion if it is to entertain any hopes of winning the league. The Dunedin side won the match at Queen Elizabeth II Park, 2-0. with both goals being scored by lan Boath, one in each hdlf. Green Island was quicker to the ball and showed more energy and determination than V estern — a direct contrast to ■ estern s two earlier league per- |^ r P?^, nces > against Woolston *» .M.C. and Rangers. The loss of one ol its most Important defenders, Murray S .uth, with broken eeth after a c Vision late in the game, and a so Rob Courtenay, vith a pulled groin muscle injury, did n t help Western's cause. Xfter trailing 2-1, until just a ter half-time. Papanui beat Shamrock. 3-2, at Riccarton Donain. Shamrock played very well r the first half and two goals » om Mike Glubb, who had an excellent game, was its ieward. Mike Hogan scored one for
Papanui and right on naif-time Alan McCall equalised with a penalty after a Shamrock player nad handled the ball in the penalty area. The second half contained too much scrappy soccer, with neither team managing to take control and a second goal by McCall was enough to give Papanui its second win of the season. Woolston scored two second half goals to beat a determined but less-talented CashmereWanderers team, 2-1, at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park No 2. Cashmere led at half-time through a penalty by Alan Smith but Woolston gave an improved display as the second half wore on and was in almost complete charge at the end. Its goalscorers were Allan Boath and Graham Archer, Boath’s being a fine effort direct from a free kick and Archer’s coming 10 minutes from the end. Two penalties from John Souter and another goal from Steve Welford gave Rangers a 3-1 win over Technical at Rangers Park. lan Cowan scored Technical’s goal from a free-kick, his third goal of the season. Caversham maintained its onepoint lead however, with an easy 6-0 win over North End United in Dunedin. It lead 2-0 at halftime through John Ravenscroft and John Moodie and four second
bait goals by Pat Berry, Including one penalty, sealed a convincing win. Berry is now the leading goalscorer with six goals in three games. MIDLANDS LEAGUE
