Trainer fined
R. B. Shields, the trainer of De Navara, was fined $l5 by the Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee on Saturday for the late scratching of the horse from the Second Courtenay Handicap last Monday.
De Navara, one of the original emergencies for the race, gained re-entry to the field because of scratchings but Shields did not make an inquiry to find out whether the horse had got back into the field and he had not been advised by the club that the horse had gained re-entry to the field. The judicial committee made it quite clear that al-, though it was aware that it I was common practice fori club secretaries to notify connections of runners! which had regained entry into fields it considered that connections of horses balloted out had obligations to find out for themselves if their runners had regained entry.
Because the judicial committee considered that in this particular case there were mitigating circum-i stances thev imposed the! minimum fine. The Omoro-based Shields! did not attend the hearing but submitted a written explanation to the club. C. A. Brough, the rider of Saintly Girl in the Haiewood Handican on Saturday. was fined S 5 bv the dismount steward for dismountine from the horse, which had finished second, before being instructed to do so.
