Kirkpatrick steps down in style
PA Gisborne t he former All Black captain, lan Kirkpatrick, stepped down from representative rugby in style in Gisborne on Saturday when he led his Poverty Bay side to a 39-10 win over Victoria. Poverty Bay led, 13-7 at halftime.
Kirkpatrick was at his best, scoring a try under the posts in the first half, lifting the play of his pack in the second half to the stage at which they gained complete dominance and setting up three of Poverty Bay’s five tries in the second half. With fellow’ loose forwards,
Paul Tocker and Warwick Wilsher, Kirkpatrick dominated the second half of the game and the Victoria backs were under constant pressure from the driving Bay pack. The Victorians’ best forward was Glenn Hill, who stood out well in the line-outs and ran strongly in the loose. Scores.—Poverty Bay 39 (Victor Simpson (2), L. Barbara, Phil Duncan, Peter Clark, Warwick Wilsher, lan Kirkpatrick, tries; John Whittle four conversions and one penalty), Victoria 10 (John Slight a try, Paul Gascoigne two penalty goals).
