Audience coughing

Sir, — When worldfamous artists come here to entertain us, may we have silence to listen and enjoy. Some years ago I attended a concert in the United States by the famous guitarist and lutanist, Julian Bream. There was the usual coughing here and there, jarring on sensitive ears. He quietly put down his lute and said: “There hasn’t been any silence for some time now. For God’s sake, shut up coughing!” And they did. There was complete silence after that —- full proof that coughing among audiences is just a nervous habit. On Monday night Julian Bream will play for us in the James Hay Theatre. With all due respect to members of the audience, may I quote Mr Bream to “shut up coughing” — please. —• Yours, etc., (Mrs) B. J. WOOD.. April 21, 1979.
