Trial for flashing lights at night
PA Wellington! The Ministry of Transport' is considering the in-j troduction al night of flashing amber lights to replace the three-light intersection! system. Flashing amber lights, ini use in some parts of Austra-i lia and Europe, would mean; "proceed with caution.” The Ministry’s chief tral-j fic engineer (Mr C. Clissold) said that traffic experiments to be made at Takapuna in Auckland in about six months would include trial of such a system
| "The Takapuna ex- ' periments will have much to do with whether it is ini troduced. We certainly will J not change over quickly I Parliament would have W (agree,” Mr Clissold said. j “One of the problems at i night is that we get more ; accidents now with people ; going through red lights. II (is not clear that it would b« i safer with flashing amber lights. But if thg Takapuna experiments show it is safe! and saves fuel, there i| every possibility it will bq introduced, ** he said.
