Erosion worry

PA Dunedin Serious erosion round the Cleddau River could undermine a Tourist Hotel Corporation hostel, an airstrip, and fishing facilities at Milford Sound. The erosion started in the lower Cleddau River area after heavy rain late last year and could cost about $200,000 to correct.

Engineers, soil conservationists, and representatives of fishing and tourism interests, the Tourist Hotel Cor-

poration, the Fiordland National Park Board, the Department of Lands and Survey, and the Otago Catchment Board have met in the last two days to discuss the situation.

Mr J. Harty, the Commissioner of Crown Lands at Invercargill, said that various recommendations would be made to the Cabinet to solve the problem.

The Government would have to decide how to raise the $200,000 needed.
