PA Wellington Dr Miles Barnett, director of the New Zealand Meteorological Sevice from 1939 to 1962, has died. Dr Barnett had a distinguished academic career, first in New Zealand, where he graduated with first-class honours in 1924, and then in Britain where he completed his doctorate at Cambridge in 1927. At Cambridge he worked in the Cavendish Laboratory under the directorship of the late Lord Rutherford and Professor E. V. Appleton. The research for his thesis was designed to prove the existence and measure the height of ionised layers in the upper atmosphere. On his return to New Zealand he worked as a physicist with the D.S.I.R. on problems related to seismology. In 1935 Dr Barnett studied meteorological services in Britain and Norway before becoming senior meteorologist with the New Zealand Meteorological Service.
He was the permanent New Zealand representa-
