TOP WOMAN GOLFER DIES
One of the most notable personalities in Canterbury golf, Miss Valmai Fleming, died in Christchurch recently. She was one of the province’s top players for many years. Although she started her golf at Russley, she made her mark with the Christchurch club at Shirley, winning the club championship six times — the first in 1932, the last in 1953. Miss Fleming won five provincial match-play titles, in 1933, 1934, 1938, 1939 and 1943. At the 1936 national championships, she won the Mellsop Cup, for the best aggregate score over the four stroke rounds, and took the foursomes title in partnership with Jean Horwell. Miss Fleming won New Zealand representation against a British team and in a Tasman Cup match with Australia. Her other main interests were horseriding, and extensive travelling.
