'Strengthen police'

PA Wellington A significant increase in police manpower and resources was called for yesterday by Labour’s spokesman on police, Mr M. A. Connelly. He said that he was particularly concerned about continuing sex attacks and assaults on women and girls. Newspaper reports recently had noted that sex attackers and muggers were active in central Wellington, sometimes even accosting people in daylight. The problem was not confined to Wellington. Mr Connelly wanted to know when the Government would honour its election pledge that “National will continue to support the police and give them the means in men and equipment to do the job of ensuring our streets are safe to walk in.”
