Beef up 10c again
The upward drive in export beef prices seems unending, and must also be reflected in domestic prices. Not unexpectedly, after reports of a further increase in prices for imported beef in the United States, prices for export beef have been raised another 10c a kilogram for all grades, matching the increase early last month. In the last two months prices have risen 33c to 41c a kilogram, but not all of this extra money is going
into farmers’- pockets. The percentage of gross returns skimmed off into the beef stabilisation or buffer account is steadily rising and next week will be 22.222 per cent for manufacturing beef and 17.123 per cent for prime. The extent of the skim-off has been a sore point with some producers, and has been reported to be responsible for more cattle being sent to auction markets. All other schedules of prices are unchanged.
