Strike halts paper mill
PA Rotorua Production at the Tasman pulp and paper mill at Kawerau stopped yesterday as the three-day-old strike by 60 electricians strangled the plant. Only half of a pulp mill was working earlier in the day because of breakdowns which had occurred since the electricians went on an indefinite strike at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. More faults then developed, causing the mill to close. The Tasman management met representatives of the Electrical Workers’ Union, but no agreement was reached on a return to work, said Tasman’s public affairs spokesman (Mr S. W. Reidpath). The electricians are not expected to meet again until 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
