Another chance for Barry
By
JOE HARNETT
Kevin Barry should further his already impressive record when he meets the Auckland welterweight champion, John Gillespie, in the feature bout of the Eric Pocock memorial tournament, which will be conducted by the Canterbury Boxing Association at the Caledonian Hall tomorrow afternoon. The rangy Barry narrowly
lost the decision in a hardfought bout with the manytimes national title holder, Ron Jackson, a fortnight ago, and is in excellent form considering the early stage of the season.
He is an extremely swift mover and has a solid punch in both hands, and this combination should be too much for the tough Aucklander. The progress of the Crichton Cobbers welterweight, Avon Pleasant, will be of
interest and his bout with Brian Witheridge (Barrys Gym) will give a chance for his worth to be gauged. Pleasant won his most recent fight — his only one to date — with ease, and fought with the style and aplomb of a more experienced fighter. The C.B.A. is endeavouring to find an opponent for the popular coloured American boxer, Maurice Betts, and there is a chance that he
may be matched with the Timaru champion, Tony Attwood. If this bout eventuates, the elusive Betts will find the well-performed and canny Attwood a difficult opponent,
These bouts will be supported by another nine and will include boxers from Temuka, Ashburton and Nelson.
