Pay rise for prelates

in London In spite of a protest among some Anglican bishops led by a" former England cricket captain, the Rt. Rev. David Sheppard, Bishop of Liverpool, an 18 per cent pay rise has been confirmed for senior Church clergy. But Bishop Sheppard has said he will refuse the full increase and will take no more than 9 per in line with the low-paid public-sector workers. The Church Commissioners announced the rises in February, but agreed to reconsider them after opposition began. They have stood firm, pointing out that none of the increases have been sought by the clergy themselves. The rises mean that stipends of diocesan bishops will go up from $11,230 to $13,320.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Donald Coggan. will get a rise from $21,180 to $25,010, but in the past he has declined to take the full salary.
