Survey of N.Z. arts audiences

The Arts Council has made a door-to-door survey of 3000 randomly selected people, to ask how New Zealanders feel about attending arts performances, the Press Association reports. Internal Affairs Department researchers, responsible for the survey questionnaire, are collating results and hope to publish their conclusions by the end of the year. The survey asked people to name the last performance -of various arts, including opera, craft exhibitions, drama, jazz, and painting, that they saw last year. The council hopes the

survey will reveal whether ticket prices, timing, transport, or lack of publicity, deterred people from attending performances.

It was also aimed at gauging the arts activities of small towns and suburbs. The information will help the council decide funding to ensure New Zealand’s cultural development remains balanced, according to its acting director, Mr J. Booth. “We want to ensure that our money is going in the right directions and being used effectively. The research will provide us with a basis.”
