Drivers to protest?
PA Auckland Simultaneous protests by truck drivers at centres throughout New Zealand may follow recent calls by Auckland drivers to drop the controversial road user charges system. The Auckland drivers have asked the Road Transport Association, a long-time critic of the charges, to organise prot e s t demonstrations throughout New Zealand, with the aim of toppling the system.
Road Transport Association (Mr R. P. Martin) said yesterday that he felt the call by the Auckland drivers would be taken up by the association as a whole. If that happened, the demonstrations could be organised in different cities at the same time. But Mr Martin said that as far as he was concerned there would be no protests that involved breaking the law. He was referring to re-
cent action by truck drivers against road charges in Australia. Truckers blocked main routes there in a showdown with the Government. The calls for action by Auckland drivers have so far forestalled moves by more militant drivers to force the Government’s hand on the issue. It had been suggested that some of those drivers should make a surprise blockage of an arterial route in protest against the charges.
