Table tennis starts

Four of the strong contenders for the A grade winter table tennis title recorded wins when the competition began at the Selwyn Street hall on Wednesday evening.

University and the young Avonside II team both had comfortable wins over Riccarton II and Selwyn-Dallington respectively with no particularly surprising individual results. Avonside I beat Linwood 11, 8-4, with Trevor Flint filling in for Canterbury’s top player. Wayne Adamson. Stephen Dixon had a sjood win over Les Stewart in one of his singles matches but with Maurice Burrowes w’nning three singles and Avonside winning two doubles matches, the powerful Avonside team had a fairly easy win.

There was one surprising result in Riccarton Fs 9-3 win over Avonside 111. Stuart Armstrong, who won the Easter open singles title on Monday, was beaten in three games by Mike Warren, back after a lay-off during the summer.
