Lights for league an Aust. 'first’
NZPA Sydney The Great Britain rugby league team will create history when it plays a test match against Australia under floodlights in June. Mr Kevin Humphreys, chairman of the Australian Rugby League, said that the innovation was made to fit in with a big Brisbane racing carnival which will be held at the same week-end. The first test between the two countries will be held at Lang Park on June 16 at 6 p m. “We have made this gesture on behalf of the Queensland Turf Club which originally approached us about the possibility of playing the international at nights,” said Mr Humphreys. “That week-end the big Stradbroke Carnival will be staged and by playing the league test at night, many people visiting the
city will be able to attend both the racing and the football.” The English Rugby League happily accepted the night booking for the test as most football in England is played under lights. Six of the tourists’ 18 Australian matches will be played under lights but the seocnd and third tests, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, will begin at 3 p.m. The Englishmen will « play their first game on May 25 against North , Queensland at Mackay under lights and will end * their visit with the third ' test in Sydney on July 14 -
