Lightning sets fire to tanker
NZPA Nederland, Texas A bolt of lightning struck a Greek tanker unloading crude oil at the Sunoco Oil Company’s docks last evening, touching off a series of explosions and a raging fire. Crew members reported seeing one man killed in an explosion, but his body had not been recovered, the Coast Guard said. Initial reports had said three persons were killed. The Coast Guard said that the ship, the Sea Tiger carrying about 24,500 barrels of oil, was in danger of sinking. “Two-thirds of her are burning,” said a Coast Guard spokesman, Mr Dave Galgay. “She will probably bum and explode right through and Sink. It doesn’t look as if she can be saved.” Six crew members were not accounted for, the Coast Guard said, but there were conflicting reports about the number of crew aboard the tanker and the number not accounted for. The Coast Guard said there were 33 crewmen, including 18 injured. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said there were 31 crew members, of whom 30 were injured slightly, and one man believed killed.
