PA Auckland The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys) has put a quick damper on a suggestion that New Zealand should amalgamate with Australia to improve export marketing prospects. There had been talk of such an amalgamation since the turn of the century “and I think New Zealanders have given the answer to that,” he said. Mr Taiboys was told at

the annual meeting of the New Zealand Bureau of Importers and Exporters that New Zealand’s voice and its marketing prospects were too small to compete with bigger countries, many of which were amalgamating or forming communities.

“Linking with Australia is not going to help us sell any more lamb,” Mr Taiboys said. “We will continue to argue and battle with the E.E.C.”

Mr Taiboys said he was confident New Zealand would also develop new markets for lamb.

At the end of his address he was thanked by the Bureau’s president (Mr J. C. Averill) who said: “I hope it is a long time before I stand up here and call you Mr Deputy State Premier.”

Mr Taiboys: I don’t intend being around that
