Renewed pine-export bid

' Armed with the results of radiata pine strength tests, the Forest Service hopes to break into the Japanese sawn-timber market. The tests should help to convince the Japanese of the timber's strength and suitability as a framing material, said the director of the Utilisation-Devel-opment Division of the Forest Service (Mr T. Foley). The service hoped that the Japanese would alter their restrictions on the

use of pine. Export of logs to Japan would continue but New Zealand wanted a share of the higher value sawn-timber market. After a visit here last year, Japanese officials indicated that they would reconsider the standards for radiata pine. However they also warned the Forest Sendee that it would have a big promotional job to convince the Japanese building industry of radiata pine’s suitability for framing. “They were agreeably

surprised and impressed with our quality control and the extensive use of the timber in construction,” said Mr Foley. Constraints had been introduced by the Japanese after poor quality timber sawn from logs in Japan had been marketed. Plans for promotion in Japan include market research, invitations to Japanese building representatives to visit New Zealand, and a seminar for Japanese builders.
