Costly cheep

Blackle and Co. By Hockley Clarke. Gordon and Cremonesi. 107 pp. $15.65. Mr Clarke is an enthusiastic birdlover of long experience, and one of those engaging gentlemen who write annual letters to “The Times” on the appearance of willow warblers in Regent’s Park. But anyone hoping to find detailed information on the life and habits of the blackbird in this rambling work will be disappointed.

Cats are Mr Clarke’s pet hate, and neighbours who keep them draw fire at several points of his discourse. The book is not particularly well illustrated, and its price seems impossible to justify. There are many more useful and attractive volumes available for less. — A. J. PETRE.
