Lyttelton lacks tug power
Engineering problems with i the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s main tug, the God- ' ley, highlighted the need for I more tug power, said a board ; member, Mr J. F. Davidson, yesterday. I The board’s chief engineer ! (Mr J. B. Bushell) referred to I fatigue problems with the I tug’s propulsion unit when , he gave a report at yesterday’s meeting of the board’s I port development committee. 1 He said there were signs < of metal cracks; he was not ; sure of the cause but there i were indications of fatigue. Agents for the Schottle unit < from Australia had inspected t the unit, and parts had ar- 1
rived from the Netherlands.. Mr M. J. Dobson asked whether the port was able to handle shipping of a reasonable size without the Godley. “So far we have been lucky with the weather but ship handling is taking about an hour longer,” said the Harbourmaster (Captain J. A. Barbour). The old steam tug Lyttelton II had had to be used to bring in the phosphate carrier Kolle D yesterday as a back-up to the other serviceable tug. “We cannot go on relying on luck, and this highlights the need for another tug,” Mr Davidson said.
