No scallop size ban?
PA Nelson The size restriction on Nelson scallops may be abolished this season, allowing fishermen to take much smaller shellfish, according to fishing sources. They said that rather than being restricted to the traditional 4in (10cm) size limit, new controls were being considered for the industry. These could include strict area and quota restrictions. Last year’s disastrous season has prompted the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the scallop industry to investig ..e better
methods of protecting the fishery. Alternatives already considered are to continue as last year with the size limit, to close completely the fishery for the 1979 season, and to abolish the size restriction in favour of area and quota controls. The last meeting of the Southern Scallops Advisory Committee, representing fishermen, processors, and researchers, opposed closing the season and as few wish - to see a repetition of last year’s problems, the third alternative appears to be favoured.
