Flounders subject to size limits

Flounders caught by amateur fishermen are still subject to size limits, according to the regional fisheries officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Christchurch (Mr R. V. Reid). He was commenting on a news item in “The Press” about big catches of small flounders by commercial fishermen in Lake Ellesmere. Commercial fishermen only could take flat-fish of any size, mainly because

those caught in a regulationmesh trawl net were usually dead when they reached the surface, said Mr Reid. “There is no point in throwing dead fish back into the sea when they can be put to some other use. That is why the size limits were abolished,” he said. Amateur fishermen were still governed by size limits of 23cm for lemon soles and “square flounders,” and 25cm for all other flat-fish, said Mr Reid.
