Addington Market Some calf classes show easier trend

More than 2<xmj calves wert yarded at Addington yesterdaj and they met a somewhat vanable market. The best of the selection held to recent good rates, but prices for medium and smaller types eased a? the sa:e progressed bj. up to SlO to sls a head and more, but later in the sale the market picked up again. Outstanding SimmentaJ cross calves in the selection brought to $260 for steers and $217 for heifers. These cattle from O. J. Os* borne 'Leeslon. who has had the distinction of topping the market for at teas-t three years now. The offering of store sheep exceeded 10,000 head and comprised mainly lambs, which tended to be a little easier than last week. After the alterations to market dates this week because of Easter. there will be further manges next week because of Anzac Day. Aii prime stock, pigs and dairy cattle will be sold on Monday; store sheep and adult store cattle on Tuesday, and store calves on Thursday. * Store cattle There was another big offering n: calves and the sale went on into the late afternoon. The yarding totalled 2060 head, compared with !820 last week While the top selections of cai'.es continued to sell strongly at late rates an easier trend became evident for the medium and -mailer calves and these looked to be cheaper by fully $lO to Slj a bead and in cases even more, but later in the sale, whenl the smaller pen lots reached themarket, recovered again and ini the opinion of some observers! even returned to late rates.

The easier turn in the market uas attributed by some to the size of the offering and also to an excessively high price level being set last month, possibly because of some buyers wishing to reduce their tax commitments before the end of their financial year. The best of the steer calves brought from about $165 to S2OO. with odd sales up to $260, which was paid for some Simmentalj cross from Leeston. Medium sorts sold from about $l3O to I SI6O, and light and small down to! about §77.
