Arthur Thomas letter
Sir, — While welcoming support on the matters raised by Arthur Allan Thomas’s letter smuggled from Hautu Prison, I hasten to clarify for Stephen Paddock and your readers, that I am not raising the matter of Thomas’s guilt or innocence, which is being dealt with by people of greater competence and qualifications than mine. As an ordinary citizen I am concerned about Thomas’s charges that he is being discriminated against by the Justice Department? that he is not allowed to work on the prison farm, that he is confined to the compound picking up pieces of paper and cigarette butts, that his visitors are restricted, that he must ask permission for the weekly telephone call granted to other prisoners, that he is not allowed to
join other prisoners in sports visits to Turangi prison. The Minister of Justice should be required publicly to answer Thomas’s charges and, if they are true, explain why. — Yours, M. CREEL. April 19, 1979.
