Navy officer charged
PA Auckland An officer who was in charge of a Navy vessel which sank during the recovery of the crashed Flit in the Hauraki Gulf last November on Wednesday faced a naval Court Martial Sub-Lieutenant John Bernard Pope pleaded not guilty to two charges: that on November 8 by negligence he caused the vessel Meola to be hazarded and that by negligence he damaged the vessel by causing it to strike a shoal in the Motuihe channel.
The Court comprises Com* mander J. Welch. Lieutenants Commander R. Lieutenant-Commander J, Granville, and Lieutenant J, Ladd. Commander E. D. Dean is prosecuting and Mr C. S< Blackie represents the accused. The Court was told that Sub-Lieutenant Pope had been in charge of the Meola at the crash site of the Royal Australian Air Force bomber. As the vessel had
