$1/ 2 M sought for hospital
The North Canterbury Hospital Board seeks an extra $500,000 from the
Government to meet the running costs of Templeton Hospital. i The hospital employs 574 staff, 50 short of the estimated staff needs for the
new financial year. The board’s treasurer (Mr F. R. Harrison) told a meet-
ing of the board’s finance committee yesterday that the hospital had either to reduce staff numbers to keep within its budget or overspend to meet its staffing needs.
The secretary of the hospital (Mr W. P. Tenetti) said that running costs had been pruned as far as possible. Mr H. T. Dean suggested
that the board’s general hospitals “carry” the extra finance needed for more staff
at Templeton. The. chairman of the committee (Mr C. F Whitty) said that this would be impossible because of Government restraints on health
spending. The committee recommended that the board con-
duct a survey’ at Templeton Hospital to justify the required staffing establishment of 624. The results could be presented to the Health Department to support the case
for extra finance. Mr Harrison said that the board spent almost SBOM last year, $60,000 less than estimated.
