Council’s higher spending

The Christchurch City Council’s policy and finance committee expects to spend $283,000 more from rates this year than last year, mainly because of 217.000 paid out in higher wages.

The committee also stands to gain 8100.000 less from petrol tax because of fuel savings, but might make up for that through other receipts. Councillors were told at the council’s first estimates committee meeting yesterday that a special rate to finance loan servicing would have to yield about SI.2M, compared with almost $BlO,OOO last year.

Higher loan-servicing costs have as their principal cause three projects — the new City Council office building, the new Canterbury Public Library, and the metropolitan rubbish-disposal scheme. The new Canterburv Pro motion Council would also receive $26,000, up from about $BBOO last year.
