Toilet fire empties store

Police are treating as suspicious a fire in a firstfloor lavatory that prompted the evacuation of the central Christchurch store of D.1.C.Beaths yesterday.

Shoppers and staff fled from the store soon after 4.20 p.m. when the fire alarms started to ring. The fire in a men’s toilet, was quickly extinguished by the shop’s sprinkler system.

Damage to the toilet was minor but water released by the sprinkler system cascaded through the ceiling on to displays below. Firemen spread tarpaulins over the affected area in an attempt to confine the water damage but the jewellery store of Mr Keith Weatherall, directly below the toilet area, was inundated. The shop has been open for only a week.

Mr Weatherall, pictured catching some of the water in an ash tray, was philosophical about the mess.

“It is a pretty good christening,” he said.
