Stewart fountain: kill or cure?

The much maligned Stewart Fountain, at the comer of High and Colombo Streets, could cost the Christchurch City Council about $12,000 to keep in good order. Given by Sir Robertson Stewart, the city-centre fountain cost about 520,000 in the first place, the council’s policy and finance committee was told yesterday. Two councillors said it might be a better idea just to take out the fountain’s superstructure. “What would be the cost of putting a decent fountain down there?” asked Cr Vicki Buck. Sir Terence McCombs said it was a matter of either getting the fountain repaired, or “scrapping” it. The fountain had substantial corrosion, some of it a result of vandalism. Some was electrolytic corrosion. The committee was told that $12,000 would be needed to install a rotary screen, and make rhe fountain easier to inspect and maintain. “Only the superstructure at the top is the problem,” Sir Terence said. The committee’s chairman (Cr N. G. Hattaway) said he would talk to Sir Robertson about the problems.
