Shivaree and Dulcify to clash at Canberra
NZPA Sydney! Shivaree, the New Zealand horse described by one Sydney newspaper as “the per-; sonality horse of the Aut- > umn meetings,’’ is likely to; face the A. J. C. Derby win- ’ ner, Dulcify, in the $40,000 weight - for - age National Stakes (2000 m at Canberra! on Sunday week. Dulcify’s trainer, Colin Hayes, yesterday announced that he will enter the New Zealand-bred colt for the National Stakes. i He had intended to Spell; him but said yesterday that j Dulcify had pulled up well! after Monday’s run and that the $27,000 first prize in Canberra looked attractive. The Doncaster Handicap winner, Belmura Lad. has! also been mentioned as a! likely National Stakes runner. , u Shivaree is expected to be favourite, for the event after his wins in two recent big weight-for-age races in Sydney the $150,000 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill on April 7 and the $25,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Monday. In the Tancred Stakes Shivaree set a new course record when beating Dulcify
by a length-and-a-half, and aj return clash between these j 1 two is sure to attract a lot 11 .of interest. Dulcify’s Derby win — on 1 .protest after Double Century J I went past the post first — j was his fourth success in | races featuring SIOO,OOO orj more prize money, and the < Tancred Stakes is his most important defeat. The National Stakes will be Shivaree’s third and final run in Australia this campaign. He is booked to return to New Zealand on May 4.
