Addington Market Prices up further for lighter prime cattle

Prime cattle continued to sell : strongly at Addington market yesterday, the lighter weights i showing a further rise of about $lO a head, while heavier cattle, of which there was not a very I: big selection, were from firm to:: dearer. ; Adult store cattie were forward in only small numbers 1 again and sold about late rates. There was a big offering of prime lambs, values for which ; were inclined to be easier, although good lambs still con- - tinned to sell well. There was antoher strong sale > in the prime sheep pens, older ewes being dearer and some with : a good pelt making to $19.60. : In the dairy section, a grade Th-calf Friesian heifer topped ; 8400. Vealers sold mainly on a . par with late rates but anything ; showing quality was in demand at fractionally better prices. i In the pig sections values re- ; mained mainly at late good rates, , but heavy baconers gained j ground in the fat section. Prime lambs The lamb sale was a big one for the second tveek running, the < yarding totalling 1493, com- 1 pared with 1551 a week ago. i Quality tended to be mixed and not particularly good, which did : not help the general tone of the s sale. While gpod lambs continued to sell reasonably well the general I impression was that the sale was easier, some of the better woolly 1 lambs being back by as much as S2 or S 3 and shorn lambs by $1 ! to $1.50; but the over-all decline was probably less than that. Prime cattle The emphasis was still on the light-weight cattle in the prime cattle section. The entry was a big one again, about 630 head compared with 382 last week, but in spite of the size of the offering the sale was very good one. There was an absence of really heavy-weight cattle and the selection was generally one of cattle of suitable weights for the butchers’ trade. For the lighter-weight cattle, the market picked up again by about $lO a head and there was a very strong sale for a large offering of heifers. For the heavier cattle, values wer on a par to dearer but the offering of these was fairly limited. On the per-kllogram basis beef was selling about $1.35 to $1.40. Store cattle The adult store cattle sale again attracted only a small selection and values remained about late rates. Two-and-a-half-year-old steers made to about $3OO, with two-year-olds ranging from about $l7O to $262 and 18 month-old steers from $2OO to $235. Among sales were:— S. W. Pilbrow (Kaikoura), 38 two-year-old Hereford and Angus cross steers at $l7O to $241; Crystal Brook Farm (Cheviot), 20 two-year-old Angus cross and Hereford steers at $255 to $262; E. and 11. Finney and Company (Amberley), 10 21-year-old Hereford steers at .$300; M. R. Eddy (Irwell), 8 18-month-old Hereford steers at $2OO, 13

Angus-Hereford cross steers at $235, and 21 Angus steers at $2OO to $232. Dairy cattle There was a tally of 12 dairy cattle compared with eight last week. Prices for cows and heifers either in calf or recently calved lay mainly between $3OO and 8400. The top price at $402 : was paid for a grade Friesian heifer from Spreydon Lodge, which was in calf to a stud Friesian bull. A Friesian fourth calver, with good production figures, from D. H. Beattie (Kaikoura) realised 8352. It was part of his capital stock. In the veal section the offering of about 70 head compared with 47 last week was not of outstanding quality, but anything showing quality was well sought after at fractionally firmer rates. Other classes were, however, on about a par with late rates. The tops of the selection made to about 8250 with an odd sale to §269 paid for a Hereford steer. Good realised from about 8200 upwards and medium from 8170 to 8190, and others sold down to about 8120 for calves. A small selection of bobby calves were keenly sought at $3O to $36. Fat pigs There was another small yarding of fat pigs, comprising mainly baconers with very few porkers included. The market was very similar to last week’s good rates, although the heavy baconers improved by $5 per head and there were odd sales of these above $lOO. There was a bigger yarding of choppers and: they again sold very well. There appears to be a slight shortage of good choppers. Values were: Light porkers, $5O to $56. Medium and heavy porkers, $56 to $65. Light and medium baconers, $66 to $BO. Heavy baconers, $BO to $9O, with odd sales to $102.50. Choppers, light, $4O to $5O. Choppers, good, $BO to $9O, with odd sales to $lOO. Another very small entry in the store pig section sold at last week’s very good rates. Quality was generally very good, but there were very few large stores included. There were no quotable sales of breeding stock. Values were: Small weaners, $22 to $26. Good weaners, $27 to $3l. Slips and small stores, $32 to $3B. Large stores, $39 to $44, with odd sales to $48.50.
