Measles campaign

The immunisation of every child in New Zealand against measles is the aim of a national campaign which will be launched on Saturday.

The “Stamp out Measles” campaign is being organised by the Plunket Society as its big community health project for the International Year of the Child. Volunteers will start a house-to-house survey on Saturday to find children who are at risk and to invite parents to have their children immunised against English measles (morbilli). About 40 oer cent of the children in Christchurch are not immunised against these measles, according to Mrs G. Stewart, president of the Christchurch branch of the Plunked Society.

Only 60 per cent of children in New Zealand, aged under five, have been immunised against the disease. The campaign aims to reach an estimated 95,000 pre-school children who have not been immunised, plus infants who did have their measles vaccinations at nine to 10 months. “It is important that they be immunised if they are now over one year of age,” Mrs Stewart said. Some parents would not realise that the measles vaccination is not included in the three for whooping cough, diptheria and tetanus, given to each child in their first year of life, she said. Immunisation against measles had tct be asked for from the doctor, she said.. Parents needing immuni-

sation for their children will be given a card which they will present to their doctor or an appropriate medical authority.

“Eliminating measles as an epidemic disease will prevent a major cause of respirator j' infection, ear disease and a significant number of deaths and disablement through mental handicap,” said Dr I. Hassall, the deputy medical director of Plunket. Parents who do not receive a visit from the volunteers for Plunket on Saturday should telephone the nearest clinic for details of local immunisation dates and venues. Christchurch needs more volunteers for the campaign on Saturday. Persons wanting to help with the door-to-door survey are asked to phone 60-76340 T details.
