Southern nights

POCO “Legenjjs” (ABC AA 1099): “Legends” is the best album that Poco have put out, combining the best of the West Coast sound of the Eagles, southern rock, and a dash of vocal harmonies in the tradition of CSN and Y. The album has really not been pushed, which is a shame, because in its unassuming manner it really grows into an attractive quality album — made for those who don’t understand or like the new wave.

Side one is slightly weaker, but the four tracks on side two are contrasted in

such a manner as to give the album a boost, mainly because of the writing of Rusty Young. The second side opens with '“Heart of the Night” a stirring southern nights’ song, and Young agonizes over a “Crazy Love,” on the next track. “The Last Goodbye” features some beautiful acoustic guitar work and fine vocal harmonies. It also has strength in the

lyrics, especially the emphasis on “Send me no invitation/To your farewell.” The last song and title track, “Legend,” is a “head-less” type story, set up by the rhythmic drumming of Steve Chapman, which the Eagles could easily do. The wonder is that it has not been released as a single — and if it has then it should be doing well.
