Sailor’s escape
PA Wellington A man with his clothes on fire jumped from a blazing launch when its fuel tanks exploded in Porirua Harbour yesterday. Mr Harry Wakelin, ofj Hokio Beach, Levin, said; last evening that the motor; was misfiring and he be-! lieved it was flooding. “I lifted the cover off and; it went up in my face. I; caught alight so I jumped; overboard,” he said. The 6m launch had just been filled with more than 200 litres of fuel when the explosion occurred about 100 m offshore. It subsequently sank, but was insured for 52500. Other gear on the ■ boat would have been worth I another $lOOO.
