Parklands phone improvements
' A new telephone exchange [at Burwood will be brought [into service by the Post. Office at 10.30 a.in. tomorrow. It will provide a new service for 250 subscribers and a change of telephone number for about 800 others. The area to be served by the new exchange is in the vicinity of Mairehau and Inwoods' Roads — generally known as Parkland. Most new subscribers will be able to use their tele-i phones for the first time be- 1 fore noon tomorrow and about 30 will be connected I later the same day. The cost of the project is [ about 8499.000 and the work has involved about 30,000, man hours. The new exchanges will I releive the existing exchange; at New Brighton. Service in
■lthe remaining New Brighton area will depend on the availability of cable circuits Extensive cabling work now under way along Rock. . inghorse Road will provide relief through South Brigh- , ton and this is expected to I be completed early next year. The diversion of sub- . scribers to the new Burwood . exchange will generally free telephone lines in north New Brighton and enable subscribers to obtain service within a few minutes. According to the Post [Office, the new Burwood exchange. like several others .in Christchurch, has been I equipped with a new standard tone. It sounds like a ["busy tone” but with a faster cadence, but is called a [‘‘disconnect tone.” If this tone is heard a [caller sould hang up and call again or refer to the telephone directory.
