Patients first in unit

The new Burwood Hospital spinal injury unit received its first patients yesterday. Patients from the old (spinal ward at Christchurch Hospital were moved into 14 of the new unit’s 30 beds. Built entirely on one level and with plenty of space for the disabled to move about, the unit is only the second of its kind in New Zealand. It will serve all the South Island and the lower half of the North Island. The unit’s assistant, director (Dr A. R. Bean) said there were fewer spinal injury patients now than was normal for this time of the year. Dr. Bean said that usually the number of people, with spinal injuries was boosted by summer holiday road accidents.

The next stage of the spinal unit will be a 10-bed hostel and four self-con-tained fiats. It is hoped to complete these later this vear.
