No rugby for Clive Currie this year
The All Black full-back, Clive Currie, will not play any rugby at all this year. Currie, aged 23, has made his decision on medical advice in the wake of a number of concussions he suffered last season.
His decision has nothing to do with the broken jaw he suffered in the test against Wales last November. “The jaw has healed completely; it is the concussions that are the worry,” Currie said last evening.
He is uncertain about his long-term future. He has still to obtain a permanent teaching appointment and he will wait until next year before even thinking about a resumption of his rugby career.
Currie has not played any matches this season, although he had initially intended to continue in club rugby with High School Old Boys. “But I think it’s best that I get out altogether for a
year and then review the situation,” he said. Currie’s non-availability will at least relieve the Canterbury back selector, Mr Gerald Wilson, of one major headache. Canterbury’s other All Black full-back, Richard Wilson, will now be a clear favourite to retain the position he has filled for most of the last three seasons, with Doug Heffernan, who has started the season impressively, a handy standby.
