Cairns off to England
The detachment of top New Zealand cricketers playing professionally in England has been increased. The durable Otago bowler, Lance Cairns, has accepted an engagement with the Whitburn club in the Durham League and he will leave New Zealand on Anzac Day.
Already Glenn Turner, John Wright, Richard Hadlee and Geoff Howarth are in England preparing for the county championstiip "-eason and these players will not be available for the preliminary matches organised for the New Zealand team which will take part in this year’s Prudential World Cup contest in England.
Cairns, however, will be released by Whitburn for all the tour and World Cup games.
He will be playing for the club on April 28 and his engagement will take him through to mid-September. His cricket wilt be limited over matches on Saturdays, with a Sunday, knock-out competition.
Last summer was Cairns’s best in New Zealand cricket. He took 49 wickets at 25.1, a personal record, and he distinguished himself in the test series against Pakistan with his accurate and determined bowling and some do-or-die fielding. Cairns, aged 29, now has 250 first-class wickets, has made more than 2000 runs, and has earned a big reputation for his big hitting. He should be a success in his new venture. He will return in ample time for the next New Zealand season.
