Sports first for Kaiapoi H.S.
In its eighth year of existence. Kaiapoi High School has experienced its most notable sporting achievements in recent weeks. Steve McNally set the pattern when lie became the first old boy from Canterbury's youngest secondary school io pin.' first-class cricket: but greater achievements ha\e been attained mon recently. First Jan Barnes, a 15 year-old fifth former whi stands an impressive 1.82 m, excelled all hei previous high tumping efforts by taking a Canterbury -South Island double in the intermediate grade of secondary schools' athletics championships. “She has always been promising, but only blossomed this year.” said the school coach, Peter Rosanowski. His charge's 1.53 m in winning the Canterbury title was considerably better than she had previously cleared, and the South Island winning leap was 1.54 m.
Not to be outdone, a Kaiapoi team also won a South Island title, just 10 days ago. It was the junior volleyball championship. and not surprisingly when it is noted that the coach is Sandy Fawcett. the current New Zeaand captain. Fhe team of fourth formers, with one third former, comprised girls who tave only been playing the sport a year or less, md seen in that light, this ,vas a considerable ichievement. In the quest for higher lonours, the team will be Debby Combe. Tracey Orchard. Lynda Raven, Alison Farmer. Maria Van Den Heuvel, Daryl Beattie, Joanne Robinson. Joanne Taylor and Helen McLorinan. Miss Fawcett, a national volleyball representative since 1972 and also a former provincial netball representative, is looking to take the team through to similar honours in the senior grade.
