Tense eye on volcano
NZPA-Reuter Kingstown St Vincen Thousands of St Vincent Islanders waited anxious!) I yesterday to see if the Soufriere volcano, quiet for over a day, would explode again with renewed [ violence or stay dormant. There were’ conflicting assessments among seismologists about likely developments in the wake i of an official statement that there had been no i significant activity of the volcano, which erupted on Friday, forcing the evac- , nation of 15.000 people. Steam rose continousli from the volcano’s crater which 36 hours earlier had been spewing ash and lava. Despite the reassuring official statement, some volcano watchers said it 1 was likely the volcano would erupt again. In the southern part of the island emergency camps have been set up and other i buildings are packed to ! overflowring. Helicopters and boats I from the United States Coast Guard cruised up ■ and down the coast colleci ting the people who had , refused to moi e when the i evacuation was first ordered on Friday. I The evacuation is straining the resources of the 240 sq. km island to the limit. The State-owned ; radio constantly broad- . casts appeals for aid and I cash gifts.
