Sadat tough on violent protest
NZPA-Reuter Cairo President Anwar Sadat has disclosed that the Egyptian police are under orders to shoot anyone who attacks state-owned or private properties. His warning came after a scathing speech in which he rebuked militant Islamic groups in Egyptian universities for stirring up trouble between Muslims and Christians, injuring their colleagues in clashes, and defaming Egypt’s image. "I have given my orders to the police to shoot on the
spot and without any discussion any person attempting to sabotage or destroy State or privately-owned properties,” Mr Sadat told a political rally. The President, speaking in Assyut before he returned to Cairo from a three-day visit to Upper Egypt, said he would also ban students from practising politics on the university campus. “Students can join any political party and practise politics if they so wish, but not inside the campus. I will not allow this,” Mr Sadat said. ' 1
