New commissioner?
PA Wellington Another former Cabinet Minister is expected to be posted to London as NewZealand’s High Commissioner to Britain. He is Mr L. W. Gandar, the former Minister of Education, who was defeated for the Rangitikei seat at the General Election last November. The Cabinet is expected to approve Mr Gandaris appointment at its meeting today, according to reliable sources in Wellington. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) is expected to make an announcement about Mr Gandar’s appointment after the Cabinet meeting.
Mr Gandar, a sheepfarmer, who is 60, will succeed Sir Douglas Carter as New Zealand High Commissioner in London. Sir Douglas was appointed three years ago, succeeding Mr Hugh Watt, the controversial former Labour Deputy Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has a high opinion of Mr Gandar’s talents. When the former Minister was defeated at the last election, Mr Muldoon commented that Mr Gandar was “one of our best Parliamentarians. People say they want good men in Parliament but they’ve thrown out one of the best.”
