$16,000 gang fines
PA Gisborne Seventy-nine gang members, arrested for disorderly behaviour on Sunday afternoon at Gisborne, were fined a total of $16,100, with costs of $B7O, at a special hearing in the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne yesterday. All pleaded guilty to the disorderly behaviour charge. Mr J. Imrie, S.M. remanded six more persons, who pleaded not guilty, on bail of $5OO each, to May 9. Two more persons were dealt with in the Children and Young Persons Court. Thirty-seven defendants were from Auckland and were members of the Mongrel Mob and Headhunters gangs. Thirty-two were from Rotorua, 10 from Upper Hutt, three from Waira-
rapa and three from Gisborne. The fines ranged from $l5O to $250. The Magistrate said it was a serious offence because of the many persons involved, but he would taken to the court in personal circumstances when imposing fines. The defendants were taken into account their groups of five. Inspector L de la Graham, prosecuting, said that at about 7 p.m. on Sunday the defendants arrived in Gisborne’s main street in a fleet of cars and trucks. They blocked the road from curb to curb and ran about yelling obscenities and crudities, he said. They made obscene gestures to the public, and particularly to the police. Inspector Graham said other vehicles and the
public had left the scene hurriedly. The police arrested 87 persons, he said. Mr P. Wall, appearing for the Aucklanders, said the group had intended to go overnight to Auckland to attend a concert. They had stopped to buy provisions for their journey when a small number were involved in a confrontation with the police. Because of gang loyalties, they did not wish to single out individual gang leaders, he said. Sub-lead-ers had urged others to co-operate and they had done so, preventing the incident from becoming worse. Counsel for all other defendants made similar pleas. The Gisborne police said later that the gang members were expected to leave the city last evening
