Electric car set for production
An electric car designed by two Northland inventors will be produced commercially by an Auckland' company. The first batterypowered commuter vehicle is expected to be available to the public in September.
The vehicle is essentially for commuters, having a range of 50km at 50km/h on six conventional lead-acid 1 batteries. The batteries can] be plugged in to the mains at the end of the day for' recharging.
The batteries drive two electric motors, each of which produces four kilo-
Hwatts of power (about four i horsepower). A new company has been Llormed by the inventors, - Messrs K. Edgecumbe and C. ; Horsfall, with Natural i Energy, Ltd, an Auckland firm which manufactures
solar-heating units. Contracts have been signed for the development and production of electric cars at IKawakawa. From a first batch of three or four, the new company intends to reach an
assembly rale of 10 a week, with a target of 500 models by the end of next vear.
