Shipping News Holmdale to have annual survey

The sea service to the Chatham Islands will be interrupted after the present cargo discharge of the Holmdale at Lyttelton.

The ship arrived late on Saturday and after unloading cargo this week will be withdrawn for annual survey.

A return date to service has yet to be advised and may be called at today’s berthage meeting at the port. The first meeting after the holiday week-end is also expected to be advised of sev-

eral tanker arrivals over the next two weeks. Further interesting tanker developments on the New Zealand coast are expected in the wake of the Iranian situation. Shipping interests are watching the BP fleet with interest probably because of a deal a few years ago when the BP Tanker Company and the National Iranian Tanker Company joined as a combined venture. BP sold the Iranian, company three of its 220,000 (deadweight) tonne turbinepowered tankers, British Navigator, British Prospector and British Surveyor with two smaller tankers, British Fal and British Neath for a total of $60.5M. The ships were handed over as they became free of commitments and were all registered under the Iranian flag. BP then added five matching tankers under the Red Ensign including, ironically, the British Explorer now being used in New Zealand newspaper and TV advertising for a fuel conservation promotion. The other vessels are the British Investor-Pioneer-Sevem and PioneerWye. AU 10 tankers were demise chartered to the Irano-British Shipping Company where special training was also carried out for Iranian nationals engaged in shipping management. More stringent regulations for tankers have just been announced by the InterGovernmental Maritime Consultative Organisation, after the publication last week of the interim report on the Amoco Cadiz supertanker disaster.

Ship owners are now likely to face increased pressure to modify steering systems on the larger vessels. In addition new tankers are expected to have twin fully independent systems as part of standard steering equipment. ARRIVALS Kaugourou (7 a.m.). 27,000, Wellington.
