Two die in rifle accidents
PA Hamilton A Tokoroa boy died when he was accidentally shot after he and two other boys found a loaded .303 rifle at a house in Putaruru. He was Wayne Steven Stothers, aged nine, of Tokoroa. The accident happened when the boy and his parents were visting in Putaruru on Sunday evening. The Putaruru police said yesterday that they had spoken to a man they believe- had left a loaded rifle in the house, but could not say whether charges would be laid. The dead boy and his companions had been playing in a hut behind the Totara Street house when one of them picked up the rifle and fired it.
The boy was shot in the head and died immediately. From Hastings it is reported that a man died from a gunshot wound in a hunting accident in the Kaweka Ranges yesterday.
The man, a visitor to the area, is believed to have been with a party of other hunters when he was shot. His body was flown out by helicopter late yesterday afternoon. The Napier police have only sketchy details but at the moment are treating the death as an accident.
