NZPA-Reuter Rome i Pope John Paul II celebrated a joyous Easter vigil! Mass in the splendour of St; Peter’s Basilica on Saturday] night leading the world’s; 700 M Roman Catholics in observing the Resurrection; of Christ. Cardinals, bishops, priests, nuns, and more than 20,000 faithful and tourists jammed; the huge basilica. The 58-year-oid Pontiff; stood on the porch of the basilica and carved a tall white Easter candle with the sign of the Cross and the; first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, Alpha and Omega, symbols of Christ. He also inserted five grains!
