Recycling 'poaching profits’
Some community groups, particularly in Surnner, think the Christchurch Citv Council’s rubbish-recycling scheme may be doing them out of profits from bottle drives and the like. But councillors said they were not convinced that was true, and most areas where the experiment had been run reported increased patronage because of more awareness of the need to keep resources for collectors.
“One group felt we were poaching,” said the chairman of the works and traffic committee (Cr Newton Dodge). “I would like some more evidence* from groups to prove this is so, and that their income is down substantially.”
Cr D. C. Close said that groups raising money should be allowed access to suburban rubbish bins placed during the spring and summer, so they could separate recyclable materials.
He also moved successfully to seek policy and finance committee approval for design work on a Bexlev tip recycling depot, in case money for it is approved in the new estimates.
